It’s Pie. It’s Cute.
Jun 01 2012I have a thing for miniatures. I have a thing for pie. So, I guess I’m the target market for Cutie Pie That!, makers of single-serving pies. I was sent a few to sample and got quite a kick out of their just-for-one size. Taste wise, I was also impressed.
The crust, as you can see, is gorgeously golden and flaky. The kind you fork slides right through.
I liked how subtle the filling of this little guy was, so it didn’t overtake the crust. Pictured here is the Peerless Pear Pomegranate, which had a nice balance of sweet and tart. The fruit had body and firmness, and it wasn’t some mushy mess, which is a pie sin if you ask me.
Really, every bite was great, and the best part was that I had the whole thing to myself! I was able to indulge my greedy impulses without actually being a total oinker.
The specialty of this local micro-bakery is fruit pies, which change with the season. For summer, they’re serving up blueberry, apple, rhubarb and cherry. You can get yours or give one as a gift on the Cutie Pie That! website or at these Farmers’ Markets: Sierra Madre , La Cañada-Flintridge, Larchmont Village Farmers’ Market. The mini pies are only $6, and they also sell lollipies, pies for dogs, and full size pies.

Autumn Is in the Air: I Want Pie
Sep 30 2011The worst thing about LA is the summer. There I said it. I know that’s not a popular sentiment, but summer is 5-month affair here. Sure, it starts out mild, but sweater weather ends in late May and the heat drags on ‘til Halloween. I just want to sleep with the windows closed already.
The one reprieve is that right about now, we start to get subtle hints of fall—a slight chill in the night air, an overcast day, butternut squash soup popping up on menus. It’s a hopeful feeling, and honestly, it makes me want pie.
So, in honor of the coming season (and in hope that it can be beckoned), I thought I’d post a photo of some scrumptious All Jarred Up pies I took last November. There they are, baking to crusty perfection in the oven, back when you could turn on the oven any time of day without sweating up a storm.
Ah, a storm, that would be so nice!

Highland Park: Cinnamon’s Hopelessly Addictive Vegan Pies
Aug 27 2010In a neighborhood known for its meat-centric cuisine, Highland Park’s Cinnamon definitely stands out. The vegetarian and vegan-friendly restaurant offers a large menu of Mexican favorites, including their much-celebrated “chicken” mole, burritos, pozole, sopes and homemade tamales. They also serve a bevy of salads, sandwiches and even a “shrimp” cocktail—all soy-, wheat-, or vegetable-based and completely meat free.
I’ve been a fan of this friendly little place for a while, and more often than is respectable, I find myself craving their delicious vegan pies. On my first visit, they gave me a sliver each of all four flavors: blueberry, keylime, chocolate and pumpkin. They knew what they were doing because ever since, I’ve been hopelessly addicted to these unbelievably creamy desserts.
Made in-house daily by Cinnamon’s chef Esperanza Cano (she runs the restaurant with her brother), these impeccable pies are sweet, but not too sweet, with a crumbly crust. The flavors are so authentic, without a hint of artificial flavor that plagues so many of even the most famous pies in town. I recommend taking a friend and sharing a slice of the rich, chocolate pie along with any of the others because the contrast is pretty spectacular.
All pies are $3.50 a slice or $25-30 for an entire pie (order a day in advance). A little pricey, but so worth it.
