Street Food Mondays: Antojitos de mi Abuelita

Last summer I had a dramatic mole experience at the 3rd Annual Feria de Los Moles. Well, a few actually, but the most pivotal of all happened when I sunk my teeth into a succulent piece of pork souped-up in Pueblan mole verde from Antojitos de mi Abuelita. “Divine” is the only word that accurately describes the moment.
And the only word that can describe the moment I found out that the North Hollywood food truck would be showcased at the last installment of Street Food Mondays is “YAY!” It was enough to make me leave my house on a Monday night. Hosted by Street Gourmet LA’s Bill Esparza and Evan Kleiman of KCRW’s Good Food, Street Food Mondays brings the city’s best street food to Kleiman’s Angeli Caffe in the form of a 3-course meal.
Antojitos de mi Abuelita’s pre-fixe was a take on “Comida Corrida”, the traditional economical Mexican meal enjoyed in the middle of the day. It usually includes soup, rice, a guisado (stew), and sometimes dessert. The soup served here was a Mexico City-style lentil soup with a hearty stock and lots of bacon. Yes, smoky bacon in every bite equals a great start.
Next came the white rice with vegetables. I know—who cares about white rice, but this was above average. More flavorful than you’d expect, it had a sticky rice texture that worked well with the mushy feel of the peas and carrots. It was especially good with the third course, the mole verde (pictured at the top of the post). I considered ordering the frog legs torts for some adventure, but I knew I’d be disappointed if I didn’t have the mole. Much like my first experience, I loved the slightly gritty texture (created by the pumpkin seeds), which is driven home with spicy richness. I made sure to clean the plate with the homemade tortillas.
Dessert was Arroz con Leche (rice pudding), and it was thick and pasty just like I love it. Lots of cinnamon and just enough raisins. Milky delicious.
Maybe I should start going out on Mondays more often.
