About
Hello and thanks for reading Eastside Foodbites. Here are a few questions that I get asked a lot:
Who are you?
I’m Valentina, a 3rd generation Los Angeles native (and proud of it!). I grew up in glamorous Norwalk, spent my teenage years watching punk bands at places like the Jabberjaw and the Macondo, played in a couple of bands, went to college in Long Beach, graduated, had a stint as a high school teacher, got married, moved to Venice, did some more college, lived in Alhambra for awhile, graduated again, became a copywriter, and now I reside in Northeast LA.
Why did you start Eastside Food Bites?
I’ve been into restaurants, cooking and writing for awhile, and I got a bit of a reputation for giving good food advice. Friends would say, “you should start a website,” and I thought it sounded fun, so I did. Plus, I write for a living, so it’s nice to have an independent writing outlet.
Are you a food expert?
No. I’m just a curious person with a decent palate who enjoys trying new places and pontificating, but I didn’t go to culinary school or anything. There are a lot of food bloggers out there, and some are bona fide culinary experts for whom I have nothing but respect. But me? I’m just having fun, and I encourage you to take my food writing for what it’s worth.
What do you like most about doing this blog?
I really love promoting local business. I think the best restaurants are the ones that come from the blood, sweat, and tears of passionate people, and I’m into doing any little thing I can to contribute to their success.
I also really enjoy the eating part.
Do you only write about the eastside?
This blog is about LA food culture from an Eastside perspective, so it mostly focuses on Highland Park, Eagle Rock, East LA, Echo Park, and Silverlake along with areas that don’t require too much driving—Downtown, Los Feliz, Hollywood, etc. I do, however, leave my part of town every now and again, so you’ll see the occasional Westside post.
Who takes the photos?
Me and my husband Josh. He taught me everything I know on the subject.
Do you get free meals?
It happens, but rest assured that I’ll always disclose that fact to you, so there’s no funny business. Mostly, though, I pay my own hard-earned money to buy the meals you see on this site.
Do you take suggestions?
Of course. Send your tips to eastsidefoodbites@gmail.com, or post them in the comments of this page.

Thanks, Darrell! Glad to have you!
Just wanted you to know I really enjoy reading through your website.
Thanks for all the work involved and congrats on doing this in the first place.

Thanks, Ghosty.
W O W – I am so pumped I found this blog via your twitter profile (which I am now following, I am @fashionintel) because I really appreciate your voice and the places you’re giving props too. I grew up in the SGV (Alhambra, SG), I’m also a 3rd generation Angeleno like yourself and 3rd gen Mexican-American, so I am enjoying your coverage on Mexican spots on the Eastside. I could gush for awhile but instead I’ll just leave some comments on your posts.
P.S. Did you ever see Bikini Kill at Jabberjaw? I would kill to go back and time and see that show.
@Natalie: I’m pretty sure I saw Bikini Kill at the Jabberjaw, but I’m certain I saw them at Hong Kong Cafe and The Macondo. So much fun–I always wish I could go back in time to see those shows again and take pictures. What was I thinking? I probably just didn’t want evidence because I was always lying that I was spending the night at my friends.
Just wanted to say thanks for your site. It’s helped open up a new avenue for noms in this side of our “arrondissement”, which I think has gone un-noticed (compared to the westside, which has enough support). I *nom*inate you’re site!
Please keep on doing what you’re doing. I’m an international student studying in USC, I have a knack for exploring and culinary tours. I came across your website when I’m doing an assignment for an Arts and Literature class focusing on LA. I wished I’ve found it sooner. From a foreigner’s perspective, I think this site deserves an award
. Eastside LA has always been famous for its “ghetto” image and a history of gang violence. Hence, I’ve never had much opinion and feelings towards East LA. However, your site converted me into thinking that it’s a food heaven, and now I don’t always think about the police when I hear East LA. So keep up what you’re doing, you’re showing a different side of East LA to foreigners like my friends and myself. I sincerely hope all the best for you.
P.S: Since I’m an Asian, I love bubble tea houses. “Half and Half” serves one of the best boba. My friends love their wintermelon with honey boba and pudding, but MY personal favorite is honey pudding milk tea with honey boba!

Hi Valentina! I enjoy reading about new places in my neighborhood (NELA) and surrounding areas…… even if some of them aren’t technically on the eastside (Silverlake, Echo Park, etc.).
@Chris, things change, including geographical denominations. Thanks for reading!
I grew up on the westside and spent most of my formative years in the venice punk scene, surfing, partying and eating. Some of my friends have become chefs, and some of us just enjoy cooking and eating and continuously learning how and where to make and eat great food. My wife and i are now westside transplants to Northeast L.A. and I appreciate your time in creating this valuable resource. Buen Provecho.
Thanks, Kirk!
